Just like any machine or mechanical system, air conditioning units require regular maintenance to ensure optimal functioning and a long life. Your San Antonio air conditioning and HVAC system expert MD Air Conditioning and Heating Inc. is here to provide AC repair, replacement, and regular maintenance as conditions warrant.

Air conditioning systems contain interrelated parts and components that must all work together for optimal functioning of the unit. If even one of these components begins to falter or fail, it can affect the functioning of the entire system. That’s what makes regular maintenance in the form of an annual AC tune-up so important.

AC components that undergo the most wear and tear (and require the most attention) include:

Air Conditioner Filters

Monitoring and replacing air conditioner filters are the most important maintenance step for air conditioning units. Dirty or clogged filters reduce airflow and efficiency. While some filters are reusable, others require replacement. In periods of high use, the filter may need to be addressed every one to two months.

Air Conditioner Coils

The condenser coil and evaporator coil of the air conditioner unit also collect dirt over time. While regular filter maintenance keeps these areas clean, eventually it will still collect dirt. This impairs its ability to absorb heat. It’s important to keep these areas clean and free of debris.

Coil Fins

Aluminum fins are located on the condenser and evaporator coils. Unfortunately, they can be easily bent, which leads to airflow blockage through the coil. Regular AC maintenance and/or use of a “fin comb” can help restore their ideal condition.

Condensate Drains

The air condition unit’s drain channels can also become clogged. Passing a stiff wire through the channels can reduce excess leaking and moisture.

Neglecting care of these and other air conditioning unit components can very quickly lead to a deterioration of quality and performance. The unit will not cool as effectively, and it can become less energy efficient. Without annual tune-ups, there will be a steady decline in function, and eventually, one or more of its parts will wear out.

So, Is an Annual AC Tune-Up Really Necessary?

To answer the question simply: Yes.

For continued optimal performance and relief from the summer heat, regular AC maintenance is key. This allows for high-use parts to be replaced as needed. You’ll enjoy better air quality and high functioning of the unit from year to year. You’ll also preserve your warranty and enjoy great AC performance into the future.
